Ocean Waves and Calming Dreams: Aquamarine Meaning and History

Aquamarine is a beautiful stone, but it's much more than that. Click here to learn about the aquamarine meaning and history that make it such a wondrous gem.

Imagine there are twelve stones, each gifted with special traits and meaning assigned to people across time. And no, I'm not talking about the Infinity Stones.

However, these stones do share some things in common with Marvel Comics' creations. They both have long, storied histories and represent something greater than their physical body.

And if you happen to have a birthday in March, you have one of the most wondrous birthstones of all: the aquamarine. So what is the meaning of this stone, and what origin does it come from?

Well, dear reader, you're in luck. We're here to tell you all about aquamarine's meaning and history! So sit back, play some gentle ocean sounds and let's get started.

It Blinded Me With Science

Aquamarine is a bluish variant of a mineral called beryl and is often somewhat see-through if not completely see-through. Some colors of beryl can even turn into aquamarine in intense heat (750 degrees Fahrenheit). While the gemstone tends to err on the side of a bluer color, it can also be somewhat green.

Another variant of beryl is the gemstone known as the emerald. However, while it is often difficult to find a "flawless" emerald, aquamarine has a far higher chance of achieving such a status.

Aquamarine's pricing can tend to go off of coloring: the deeper the color, the higher the price. All in all, however, aquamarine tends to be about mid-tier in the price range of gemstones.

It's important to note that aquamarine and certain colors of topaz can often be mistaken for one another. Shady dealers may try to sell you the more common and cheaper topaz for the price of aquamarine if they think they can trick you.

This birthstone is most often found in mountainous areas like the Rockies in Colorado.

Rising To Prominence: Aquamarine's History

One of the first uses of aquamarine traces back to ancient Rome, where sailors would use the stone as a protective charm of sorts when sailing over the ocean. This protection did extend to any form of travel, but the Romans believed the effects were strongest when at sea.

For the icing on the cake, the Romans also believed aquamarine acted like a spiritual energy source of sorts, putting a stop to laziness and giving the body more energy.

Fast-forward to the Middle Ages, and the aquamarine took on a new task: fortune-telling. The stone would be tied to a thin rope and swung over a bowl that had the letters of the alphabet carved into it. The letters the stone pointed to would then create a message for the user regarding their future.

Aquamarine has also had a strong association with love and romance, and people believed the gem could physically contain feelings of love inside it. Consequently, the gem became a popular gift for couples or those wishing to profess their love.

To top it all off, aquamarine was even believed to have various degrees of healing powers. The gem was supposedly used to heal the eyes and throat or to help calm someone down centuries ago.

It was even claimed to be an antidote to poison in the 1300s, and one belief stated that putting the gemstone over your heart would completely purge you of fear.

Aquamarine Meaning: What's It All About?

For starters, aquamarine aligns with those who have birthdays in March or those who fall under the astrological sign Pisces. Pisces have the zodiac symbol of the fish and are your astrological sign if you have a birthday between February 20th to March 20th.

The gem is said to make you more aware of the world around you while you're wearing it, and perhaps fittingly is still associated with the sense of exploration and the ocean that it had way back in ancient Rome. In fact, aquamarine is still said to provide those protections to travelers today.

One of the aquamarine's biggest attributes is the almost therapeutic powers it reputedly has. It's often believed that the gemstone will grant you better access to your inner feelings, allowing you to take more control of your life. It also shuts out any nagging or negative thoughts you may have to allow yourself to go about your day undisturbed.

If you are recovering from trauma or under a lot of stress, aquamarine is also said to help with that. It does so by working to break down the preconceived idea you have in your head about how events like going to that party will go down.

From there, the gemstone "allows" you to adapt to new situations and break free from any pre-event dread you may feel. So if a task like going into work in the morning and getting through the crowded lobby feels like a lot for you, aquamarine might be able to help.

Doctor Aqua's In The House

Aquamarine's associations with love are also still well and alive today. However, these connections are not only about romantic love. The gemstone can promote feelings of self-love and help rebuild or find relationships that you cherish.

Is there someone in your life who you want to reconnect with, or are you at a place in your life where you desire company? Aquamarine's got you covered, spiritually speaking.

To top it off, aquamarine is also believed to help keep your eyes healthy and aid any problems with your glands or the fluids in your body. This theory has been a mainstay in non-traditional medicine for hundreds of years.
